One of the best all-around players with his skills on defense and on special teams, Scott was a two-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-American and owns the program's career record for pass breakups (59, including an incredible 23 in 1982). His 12 interceptions in 1981 are the second-most by a Titan in a single season. Scott recorded 31 career interceptions, which rank second in school history. On special teams, he was a top-tier punter averaging 35.9 yards per punt, ranking seventh in program annals, including a 37.2 average in 1983. He was part of Titans teams that tallied 5-3, 10-1, and 9-2  won-lost ledgers in '80, '81, and '82, respectively, under legendary head coach and fellow Hall of Famer Joe Fusco. In addition to his stellar football career, Scott also excelled on the baseball diamond. His staggering statistics earned him First Team All-District shortstop honors in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984 and Honorable Mention All-American in 1984. He recorded batting averages of .434 (Fr.), .471 (So.), .417 (Jr.) and .414 (Sr.) for a career average of .445. The athletically gifted Higgins was an accomplished all around player--a slick fielding shortstop, a stellar baserunner (46 stolen bases in 48 attempts)--and possessed an uncommon batting eye, striking out only 11 times in 355 career at-bats. That's about one every eight games. Scott was one of the truly great Titan two-sport athletes.
