A four-year letterman in track & field under Westminster coaching legend Dr. Harold 6945Burry, Jones was team captain his senior year. During his career he was described by newspaper reporters as "..an Olympic prospect."

As a freshman, Jones set Carnegie Tech stadium records that had stood for over two decades in the 100-yard dash and as a member of the mile relay team. Later in his rookie season he broke the Tri-State Meet record in the 100 at :09.6. He was accepted as an entrant in the historic Central Collegiate Track Meet at Marquette University, becoming the first athlete in Westminster history to earn a spot in that prestigious national meet. Jones added the Tri-State Meet record in the 220-yard dash as a junior with a :22.1 clocking.

As a senior, Jones was selected as the Outstanding Trackman among district Class B colleges by the Pittsburgh Press. Jones helped Westminster win the Tri-State Conference Championship in his senior year.

A native of Sewickley, PA, Jones was a graduate of Sewickley HS. As a student at Westminster, Jones was a member of Alpha Tau Omega service fraternity. He also was a member of the College Chorus and sang tenor in the College Quartet.

Following a stint in the United States Army and serving in the Korean War, Jones received his Master's Degree in Vocal Music from the University of Michigan. He later earned his Ph.D. in Vocal Music and Music Conducting from the University of Missouri Conservatory of Music. During his professional life, Jones was involved with various community events, including directing the Community Chorus, assisting in City Theatre productions and an outdoor community art show, and helping to organize European tours with the choir and community. He retired as the Choral Director at Adrian College (MI) following a long career.

Jones currently resides in Brevard, NC. He is the proud father of sons Steven and Mark Jones and daughter Christina (Jones) Dodson. His wife Reda is deceased.
