NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's soccer team lost its first game of the season Friday, as visiting Cedarville won 2-1 in double overtime in the first game of the Westminster/Grove City Invitational. This was the first of eight men's and women's soccer games hosted by Westminster and Grove City this weekend.
With the game nearly ending in a 1-1 tie, Cedarville (1-1) scored the game-winning goal in the 117th minute when James Twinem beat Westminster junior goalkeeper Mike Codita (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley). Codita made two saves and faced nine Cedarville shots.
Senior Jarred Smeltzer (Wilmerding, Pa./East Allegheny) opened the scoring for Westminster in the 15th minute on an assist from classmate Ian Hill (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic). Smeltzer accounted for two of the Titans' seven shots.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game before halftime with Matt Niemiec's chip shot in the 34th minute.
Westminster (1-1) hosts Point Park Saturday at 11 a.m.
