Women’s Basketball: Titans Fall at Penn State Beaver, 74-68, in Overtime

Box Score MONACA, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 74-68, at Penn State Beaver in overtime on Saturday.
 
Four Titans scored in double-digits, led by first-year Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) who had 15 points. Junior Kristine Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) (14), senior Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lowellville) (10), and sophomore Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) (10) also scored in double figures. Kristine Fromknecht registered her first career double-double as she tied a game-high with a career-high 12 rebounds. Emily Fromknecht also had a double-double with 10 rebounds, while junior Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) had eight boards.
 
Westminster outshot Penn State 32.9%  (25-76) to 32.4% (22-68) and had a 45-42 advantage in rebounds.
 
Penn State (8-3), who never trailed in the first quarter, had its largest lead of five points twice with the latest coming with nine seconds remaining (22-17). Westminster (4-5) started the second quarter with a 14-4 run to take a 31-26 lead with 4:44 left in the half. The Lions regained the lead (37-36) with 1:03 on the clock and led 40-38 at halftime.
 
The Titans were down early in the third quarter (42-38), however, responded with an 11-2 run and led 49-44 with five minutes remaining. Penn State, however, closed out the quarter with a 7-0 run and led 51-49 at the end of three. Westminster began the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to take its largest lead of the game (59-51) with 6:03 to play. The Lions answered with a 9-0 run and led 60-59 with 2:54 on the clock. The Titans regained the lead, 61-60, after Durbin made a jumper with 2:31 remaining. Penn State split a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left, forcing overtime tied at 61.
 
In overtime, Westminster led 66-64 after Mathews scored with 3:33 on the clock. The Lions answered with a 7-0 run to go up 71-66 with 59 seconds remaining. The Titans cut the Lions' lead to three points (71-68) after another jumper by Durbin, but Penn State made three of its final four free throws to seal the win.
 
The Titans are back in action Monday, December 19 when they travel to Bethany College (WV) in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action with a 3 p.m. start time.
