Westminster women fall to Geneva

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program was dealt an 86-68 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss by visiting Geneva College Wednesday evening at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Geneva snapped a five-game losing streak with Wednesday's win, improving to 10-12 overall and 7-10 in the PAC. Westminster fell to 3-19 overall and 3-14 in the league. Wednesday was Geneva's third-straight win over Westminster. 

Freshman forward Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) matched career highs with 23 points and seven boards, finishing 8-of-20 from the floor and 4-of-11 from three-point field goal range. Wednesday was her third 20-point outing in Westminster's last four games. Sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) added 13 points and five rebounds while freshman guard Angelina Brush (Murrysville, Pa., Franklin Regional) finished with 11 points and four rebounds.

Alexandra Cozzens led Geneva with a career-high 28 points. She went 12-of-20 from the field. Cozzens added nine boards. Emily Garvin chipped in with a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double.  

Geneva ran out to a 27-12 lead after a quarter and went up by 15, 40-25, on a Cozzens' layup with under a minute left in the half. The Golden Tornadoes led by 13, 40-27, at the break. Cozzens had 12 first half points on 5-of-9 shooting for Geneva. Brush was 4-of-7 from the field in the first half, going 3-of-3 from three-point range, to lead Westminster with 11 points at the break. 

After falling behind by 19, 50-31, on Cozzens' layup with under seven left in the third, Westminster turned up the heat, using a 15-2 run to whittle the lead to six, 52-46, with just under four minutes to go. Syka's three-pointer capped the Titans' run. She scored 10 of 23 during the stretch. Behind an 11-4 surge, Geneva went into the fourth up 13, 63-50. Westminster trimmed the lead to 10, 74-61, on Cano's three-point play with just over seven minutes left in regulation. Syka and Cano each had five points early for the Titans. With five minutes left, freshman forward Ella Kassan (Streetsboro, Ohio, Streetsboro) knocked down a pair of free throws to once again trim the lead to 10, 76-66. The Golden Tornadoes closed out the game riding a 10-2 run to secure the 18-point victory.

Westminster shot 35.7 percent (25-70) from the floor and 36 percent (9-25) from three-point range. Geneva held a 48-41 rebounding advantage while Westminster's bench outscored Geneva's 36-25.
