Westminster women lose at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team fell to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Allegheny College 73-62 Wednesday evening at the David V. Wise Center. 

Allegheny, winners of four straight, improved to 17-7 overall and 16-3 in the PAC. Westminster's record fell to 4-20 overall and 4-15 in the league. 

Four finished in double figures. Sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) finished with 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting and added seven rebounds while freshman forward Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) finished with 11 points, two rebounds and five assists while senior forward Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) added 10 points and six boards. 

Jess Bickart led Allegheny with 18 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Bella Antonacci added 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. 

Westminster, trailing 24-17 after one quarter, outscored Allegheny 16-9 in the second and went into the break tied 33-33. Cano and Maryo had eight points each to lead the Titans. Cano was 4-of-8 from the floor while Maryo was 3-of-5 and drilled both of her attempted three-pointers. With just over three minutes left in the third Syka's jumper tied the game at 47-47. The Gators used a 7-2 run to close out the period and headed into the fourth leading by five, 54-49. An 11-0 run midway through the fourth quarter stretched Allegheny's lead to 16, 67-51. Skyka drilled a three-pointer with 1:17 to go in regulation that cut Allegheny's lead to nine, 71-62 before Bickert hit a pair of three throws with under a minute to go that sealed the 11-point win. 

Westminster shot 42.2 percent (27-64) from the floor and went 6-of-14 (.429) from three-point field goal range. The Titans were just 2-of-4 from the free throw line.

Westminster will close out the season Saturday at Chatham University. Tipoff inside the Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC) is scheduled for 12 p.m.
