Westminster beats Franciscan in home finale

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Freshman forward Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) and sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) helped lead the Westminster College women's basketball program to a 67-52 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) triumph over visiting Franciscan University Saturday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium, wrapping up its home schedule. 

Westminster upped its season record to 4-19 overall and improved to 4-14 in the league. Franciscan fell to 2-21 overall and 2-15 in the PAC. Saturday was Westminster's 10th-straight victory in the series that dates to 2016. 

Prior to tipoff, senior forward Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane), senior team manager Autumn Wheeler and senior Reghan Wilkerson, a captain of the Titans' cheer program, were honored during the College's Senior Recognition Day. 

Syka, in 23 reserve minutes, had 18 points, three rebounds and a pair of steals. She has scored 15 or more points in six of the last seven. Cano went 8-of-16 from the field, finishing with 17 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard Angelina Brush (Murrysville, Pa., Franklin Regional) added nine points, four rebounds and two steals while Hess totaled eight points, 12 rebounds and five assists. She has five games this season of 10 or more rebounds. 

Maria McCallen led Franciscan with 18 points and nine rebounds while Abbigail Jannuzi added 10 points. Jazzlyn Melnyk had nine points and 13 rebounds and Ilena Gonzales added eight points and 10 boards. 

Down by five, 20-15, after a quarter, Westminster erased an eight-point second half deficit with a 13-2 run over the final three-plus minutes to go into the break up three, 34-31. Syka scored 13 of her 18 in the first half. The Titans doubled up the Barons in the third and went into the fourth quarter leading by 11, 49-38. Westminster's lead swelled to as many as 20, 67-47, with just under five to play before sealing the 15-point win.

Westminster shot 35.7 percent (25-70) from the floor and made eight of its season-high 31 three-point field goal attempts (.258). Brush and Syka made three three-pointers each. Franciscan had a 50-48 advantage on the glass. Westminster had a season-high 13 steals Saturday.

Westminster will travel to Meadville, Pa. Wednesday to take on Allegheny College. Tipoff inside the David V. Wise Center is set for 6 p.m.
