PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 70-67, in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at Chatham University on Wednesday.
The Cougars (3-3, 1-1 PAC) led 34-23, their largest lead of the first half, with 2:28 remaining before halftime. The Titans (0-4, 0-1 PAC), however, finished the half with a 7-0 run to cut Chatham's lead to 34-30 at intermission.
Westminster continued its run in the second half and tied it 34-34 after a layup by first-year Kristine Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) with 18:12 on the clock. The Titans took their first lead of the game with 3:44 remaining when Fromknecht found senior Allison Borts (Youngstown, OH / Boardman) for a layup, putting Westminster in front 61-59.
Chatham regained the lead (65-63) with a pair of free throws at the 1:42 mark. Down 70-67, the Titans' had two opportunities to tie the game with a three-pointer in the final seconds; however, both shots fell short.
Three Titans scored in double digits, led by Borts with 15 points. Fromknecht and senior Jenna Grandy (Sharpsville, PA / Sharpsville) each scored 10 points. Borts also led on the glass with a game-high nine rebounds. Fromknecht and first-year Paige Quinn (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) added six rebounds apiece. Fromknecht also had a game-high four blocks.
Chatham out-shot Westminster 38.6% (22-57) to 37.3% (22-59). The Titans out-rebounded the Cougars, 42-27.
The Titans will travel to Thomas More College on Saturday with a start time of 1 p.m.
