Westminster totals three top-5 finishes in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.--Freshman Meghan Vadas (Youngstown, Ohio, Austintown Fitch) scored a pair of top-12 finishes to headline the Westminster women's outdoor track and field program's efforts at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge on Saturday.

Hosted by the City of Myrtle Beach, the two-day event is being held at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Westminster finished 19th among the 27 scored teams with 14 points.

Vadas posted a fifth-place finish in the discus with a personal-best mark of 41.50 meters (136-02). It's the fourth-best throw in program history. Vadas also finished 12th in the shot put with a top throw of 11.18 meters (36-08.25). 

Freshman Zoe Puhala (Brockway, Pa., Brockway) finished fourth in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 2:19.31. It ranks as the third-best time in program history. Junior Jenna Zendron (West Sunbury, Pa., Moniteau) was fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 58.58 seconds and was 23rd in the 200 meters (26.29).

Senior Monica Curtis (Harborcreek, Pa., Harbor Creek) finished 10th in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:29.45. 

Westminster had two finish in the top 25 of the 400-meter hurdles: senior Ryann Essey (Aliquippa, Pa., Hopewell) was 13th with a personal-best time of 1:09.33 while freshman Alayna Kelly (Hookstown, Pa., South Side) was 23rd (1:16.46). 

Junior Molly Gibson (Leetonia, Ohio, Leetonia) was 15th in the discus (37.10m, 121-08) and 25th in the shot put (10.12m, 33-02.50). Freshman Laneah Degn (Kingman, Ariz., Lee Williams) was 24th in the discus (32.42m, 106-04). 

Up next:
Westminster will split its team Friday-Saturday, March 27-28 to compete at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational and the Tim Weaver Invitational, hosted by West Liberty.
