Kovell earns PAC Newcomer of the Week honors

TRAFFORD, Pa.--Westminster freshman Zach Kovell (Aliquippa, Pa., Hopewell) was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Men's Indoor Track and Field Newcomer of the Week Tuesday afternoon.

Kovell finished 26th in the 200 meters with a career-best time of 22.61 seconds at the Youngstown State Last Chance, presented by Southwoods Health, last Friday. It's the No. 7 time in the PAC this season. He also anchored Westminster's eighth-place 4x400-meter relay, which finished with a program-record time of 3:23.49. The relay eclipsed the previous record (3:25.50) by over two seconds. Members of the relay included junior Jake Mull (Apollo, Pa., Apollo-Ridge), junior Dennis Jones (West Middlesex, Pa., West Middlesex), freshman Aaron Stebick (Butler, Pa., Butler) and Kovell. It stands as the top time on the league's performance list and currently ranks eighth in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Up next:
Westminster will participate in the WGH PAC Tune-up Saturday, which is being held at Warren G. Harding High School and the Warren City Schools Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Events are scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m.
