Jones breaks school record in 500 at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio--Junior Dennis Jones (West Middlesex, Pa., West Middlesex) shattered a nearly 17-year-old school record to highlight Westminster's men's indoor track and field efforts Friday at Youngstown State's Mid-Major Invitational, presented by Southwoods Health. 

Jones registered an eighth-place finish in the 500 with a time of 1 minute, 08.46 seconds, breaking Ryan Jones' previous record of 1:11.88, set Feb. 28, 2009.

Junior Jack Crider (Apollo, Pa., Kiski) finished 12th in the weight throw, posting a personal-best throw of 14.41 meters (47-03.50) while junior Jake Mull (Apollo, Pa., Apollo-Ridge) was 15th in the long jump (6.34m, 20-09.75). 

Freshman Nick Bender (New Castle, Pa., Neshannock) was 32nd in the 5000 with a school-record time of 16:15.89. He eclipsed Aaron Sutton's previous record of 16:28.55, set Jan. 27, 2012 at YSU.  

The distance medley relay (DMR) finished 16th with a time of 11:02.80, third-best in program history. Members of the relay included senior Justin Redilla (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley), freshman Dillon Brunner (Pittsburgh, Pa., Upper Saint Clair), Jones and junior Dalton Koehler (Chardon, Ohio, Fairport Harding).

Up next:
Westminster will split its team Saturday, completing YSU's two-day event while sending a group to the Jim Wuske Collegiate Invitational, which is being hosted by Mount Union. Events will get underway at 9:30 a.m. in Youngstown and 10 a.m. in Alliance.
