Titans wrap up regular season with Senior Recognition Day win

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's swimming and diving program wrapped up its regular season Saturday afternoon with a 180-50 victory over visiting Chatham University in a "mystery" meet inside the Westminster Natatorium. 

Seniors Patrick Benedict (Pittsburgh, Pa., Upper St. Clair), Steel Boyer (Mohrsville, Pa., Schuylkill Valley), Samuel Duda (Tulsa, Okla., Bishop Kelley), Jack Mickle (Presto, Pa., Bishop Canevin), Mason Peck (Cary, N.C., Panther Creek), Michael Phillips (Saxonburg, Pa., Knoch) and Cory Webster (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) were recognized prior to the start of the meet. 

The College also welcomed back dozens of alumni, family and friends for a special dedication and naming ceremony of the new Gene and Barb Nicholson Pool Deck. 

Westminster opened the 15-event meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay. C. Webster, Benedict, Boyer and sophomore Colton Super (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) combined to post a time of 1 minute, 54.92 seconds. 

Five swimmers secured first-place finishes for Westminster, including a trio of double winners. Duda raced to first-place finishes in the 50 backstroke (27.36) and 100 butterfly (57.00) and finished second in the 100 IM (1:15.12). Benedict won the 50 backstroke (30.91) and 200 IM (2:13.11) while freshman Jack Katigbak (North Canton, Ohio, Lake Center Christian) won the 100 backstroke (56.55) and 100 IM (58.40) and was second in the 200 freestyle (1:55.86). Mickle won the 100 freestyle (54.39) and Phillips won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.12). 

Peck registered second-place finishes in the 50 butterfly (28.31), 50 freestyle (55.09) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.18) while freshman Ethan Schohn (Pittsburgh, Pa., Plum) was second in the 100 butterfly (57.50) and 100 backstroke (1:01.98). Sophomore Hayne Webster (Wellsboro, Pa., Wellsboro) finished second in the 50 backstroke (30.02) and 50 breaststroke (31.97), Boyer finished second in the 200 IM (2:20.84) and C. Webster was second in the 50 freestyle (24.96).

Super finished first on both the 1-meter (181.20) and 3-meter (201.15) boards. 

The meet concluded with the Titans winning the 500 crescendo freestyle relay with a time of 4:38.41. Members of the relay included Duda, Peck, Phillips and Mickle. 

Up Next:
Westminster will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the PAC Championships. The four-day event will once again be held at Grove City College's James E. Longnecker Pool.
