Westminster finishes fifth at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio--The Westminster men's swimming and diving team finished in fifth place at the Oberlin Early Invitational on Saturday. 

The two-day, eight-team event was held at Carr Pool. Case Western Reserve won with a team score of 1520.50 while Mount Union posted a runner-up finish (714). Ashland was third (709.50), Oberlin was fourth (421) and Westminster was fifth (290).

During the morning session, the 200 medley 'A' relay finished ninth (1:40.34). Members of the 'A' relay included junior Jack Katigbak (North Canton, Ohio, Lake Center Christian) and freshmen Bayley Johnson (Columbia, S.C., South Carolina Virtual Charter), Gunnar Probst (Latrobe, Pa., Mount Pleasant) and David Atamian (Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda). Westminster's 200 medley 'B' relay was 11th (1:42.31). Freshmen Tyler Snow (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley), Landyn Rankin (Woodland, Pa., Clearfield), Jakob Vranick (Jeannette, Pa., Avonworth) and sophomore Joseph Galbraith (Waterford, Pa., Fort Le Boeuf) made up the 'B' relay. 

The 800 freestyle 'A' relay was sixth (7:31.80). Probst, Rankin, Johnson and Atamian swam on the 'A' relay. 

Katigbak registered a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.93. Rankin finished eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:48.71) while Vranick was 13th (1:50.89). Johnson was 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.59) and Probst finished 19th in the 100 butterfly (55.10).

Graduate student Gino Piraino (Export, Pa., Franklin Regional) finished in fourth place on the one-meter board, recording a score of 169.65 points. 

In the evening session, Katigbak was sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:00.43). Vranick finished 10th in the 100 freestyle (49.10) and Probst was 11th (49.23). Freshman Quin Manly (Westerville, Ohio, Westerville North) and sophomore Ethan Bishop (Meadow, Utah, Millard) finished 11th (18:51.03) and 12th (19:02.68), respectively, in the 1650 freestyle. Johnson was 13th in the 100 freestyle (49.74) while Rankin was 13th in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.63). Atamian was 15th in the 100 freestyle (50.35).

Westminster concluded the evening with the 400 freestyle relay. Westminster's 'A' team, consisting of Katigbak, Johnson, Probst and Atamian, finished eighth (3:20.98). The 'B' team, made up of Rankin, Snow, Galbraith and Vranick, finished 11th (3:24.89). Westminster's 'C' relay finished 16th (3:49.02). Bishop, freshman Max Chatham (Titusville, Pa., Titusville), Manly and Goff competed on the 'C' relay.  

Up next:
Westminster will participate in the Clarion Fall Diving Classic next Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Waldo S. Tippin Natatorium. Events will begin at 12 p.m.
