Duda finishes 9th in 500 at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio--Westminster College senior Samuel Duda (Tulsa, Okla., Bishop Kelley) posted a ninth-place finish in the 500 to get things going Thursday night at The College of Wooster Invitational. 

The three-day event is being held inside Wooster's Timken Natatorium. Diving events on Friday and Saturday will be contested at the YMCA of Wooster's Ellen Shapiro Natatorium. 

Through five scored events, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology leads the eight-team field with 452 points. Westminster is currently in seventh place (152). 

Westminster's 200 free relay opened the night with a 12th-place finish, registering a time of 1 minute, 32.30 seconds. Relay members included freshmen Avery Bumbach (Ocala, Fla., Forest) and Ethan Schohn (Pittsburgh, Pa., Plum), senior Michael Phillips (Saxonburg, Pa., Knoch) and freshman Jack Katigbak (North Canton, Ohio, Lake Center Christian)

Duda finished with a time of 4:49.32 to secure the top spot in the "B" finals, shaving almost six seconds off his preliminary time (4:55.11).

Bumbach took over four seconds off his preliminary time in the 200 IM to finish 17th (1:59.56). Phillips was 24th in the 200 IM (2:09.37) while Katigbak finished 13th in the 50 free (22.27). 

Westminster finished the first night with a 12th-place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:39.86). The relay was made up of Katigbak, Phillips, Bumbach and Duda. 

Friday's preliminary events are scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m., with diving to begin at 2 p.m. The finals will commence at 6 p.m.
