Softball: Titans’ Hitting Clinic Leads to Sweet 16th-Straight Victory

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster softball swept Thiel at home in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Titans won game one 10-2 and game two 11-2. This doubleheader matchup was rescheduled from Monday, April 11.

"We're getting to the meat of the season," said head coach Jan Reddinger. "Everything is happening, literally, in seven days. We hope the cylinders keep firing. Right now, we will take it. We had a lot of at-bats from other people. They did a good job and this was definitely a team effort."

The doubleheader was resumed in the second inning of game one after weather conditions postponed the event on April 11 at Thiel (7-13, 2-10 PAC).

In game one, junior Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) gave Westminster (25-2, 12-0 PAC) the early lead after a solo home run in the first. Later on, junior Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) launched her first of two homers of the game in the third, giving the Titans a 5-2 lead. Senior Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) collected her 12th win with a game-high seven strikeouts in five innings, while only allowing two hits.

Game two was highlighted by the third inning when Westminster scored three runs to extend its lead to 5-1, capped by sophomore Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City), who batted-in junior Emma Gurley (Painesville, OH / Gilmore Academy). Malczak picked up her 12th win of the season in three innings of work, only allowing three hits.

The Titans were led by Latess, who went a combined 5-for-7 with four runs-batted-in and two home runs. Gurley finished the day 4-for-5 with a pair of runs-batted-in.

Westminster is next scheduled to host Waynesburg on Saturday, April 23 in a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
