BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Westminster baseball team lost, 13-10, at Geneva in a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest on Friday.
"We need to do a better job attacking hitters, not giving up free bases and playing good defense," said head coach
Patrick Riley. "Those components really hurt us today. We did a nice job battling back, need to be hungry and ready to go tomorrow."
Geneva (9-21, 5-12 PAC) led 9-1 after five innings of play. Westminster (17-10, 12-6 PAC) continued to battle with one run in each the sixth and seventh innings, followed by a six-run inning in the top of the eighth to the game at 9 – which was capped off by a three-run home run by senior
Austin Webb (Wadsworth, OH / Wadsworth). The Golden Tornadoes answered in the bottom of the sixth with four runs to take a 13-9 lead. In the final inning, the Titans continued their rally with an RBI-double off the bat of senior
Matt Costello (New Castle, PA / Union Area). The Titans had the tying run at the plate with runners on second and third with no outs, however, Geneva's first-year pitcher Derek Sears came in for relief and retired the next three Titan batters.
Webb tied a career-high with a game-high four RBIs, including his first home run of the season and a double. Sophomore
Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) also connected on a homer and double. The Titans in total had four doubles, as senior
James Diamond (Moon Twp., PA / Moon Area) and sophomore
Jake Dockum (Fairport, NY / Allendale Columbia) also connected on a two-bagger. Junior
Hunter Stellato (Struthers, OH / Struthers) (0-1) got the loss after coming in for relief.
The Titans look to avenge the Golden Tornadoes with a home doubleheader against them tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
