Women’s Soccer: Titans Defeat Defiance, Go 2-0 in Purple and Gold Classic

Box Score DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Westminster College women's soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Defiance College, 4-1, on the road in the final day of the Purple and Gold classic hosted by Defiance on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Titans improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 0-2.
 
Titan first-year Ashley Frank (Mentor, OH / Mentor) scored the first goal of the game at the 23:41 mark of the first half. The score was Frank's first of her collegiate career. Just two and a half minutes later, sophomore Marissa Grande's (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) shot was deflected by the Yellow Jacket goalkeeper, however, sophomore Bailey Kurdys (Toledo, OH / Whitmer) gathered the loose ball and scored to give Westminster an early 2-0 lead. With just two minutes left in the first half, first-year Abby Steinbeck scored for the first time in her collegiate career from 25 yards out, giving the Titans a 3-0 advantage going into halftime.
 
In the second half (59:50), sophomore Jocelyn Gillette (Natrona Heights, PA / Highlands) found first-year Kayla Wilcox (Peachtree City, GA / Mclntosh) for her first goal as a Titan, giving Westminster a 4-0 lead. The Titans would defeat the Yellow Jackets, 4-1.
 
Senior Keely Birsic (North Ridgeville, OH / Elyria Catholic) totaled nine shots and three shots on goal. Frank registered one goal, seven shots and four shots on goal while Wilcox recorded a score, three shots and two shots on goal. Junior Kayla Trozzi (Monroeville, PA / Gateway) tallied one assist. Westminster led in total shots (34-4) and also led in corner kicks (7-1). First-year goalkeeper Camille Holzschuh (Youngstown, OH / Boardman) earned her second win of the season in goal, while first-year goalkeepers Emily Beck (Sarasota, FL / Cardinal Mooney) and Olivia Droese (Pickerington, OH / Pickerington Central) helped earn the victory in goal for Westminster.
 
The Titans are back in action Wednesday, September 5 on the road at non-conference opponent Penn State Altoona. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
