TIFFIN, Ohio - The Westminster College men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season in a non-conference game Wednesday night. The Titans lost at Heidelberg University, 103-89, despite shooting 60.3% (35-58) from the field.
The Student Prince (2-0) were ahead for the majority of the first half, including an 11-point lead with 15:59 on the clock. The Titans (2-1) continued to battle and took a 46-45 lead, their first since the 18:45 mark, after junior Paul Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) scored on a layup with 1:05 remaining. Heidelberg managed to regain the lead and led 48-46 at halftime.
Heidelberg took a commanding 77-63 lead with 9:03 remaining in the game. The Titans, however, orchestrated a 22-9 run to cut the Student Prince's lead to one point. Heidelberg, however, remained in front for the duration of the contest.
Titan freshman Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) came off the bench and tied a game-high with a career-high 22 points (8 for 10). Sophomore Matt Getsy (Mars, PA / Mars) scored 18 points (7 for 8), while junior Charlie Wallander (Pittsburgh, PA / Baldwin) registered 13. Carswell added nine points, while freshman Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) had eight. Vrabel had a game-high 11 rebounds, while Wallander added seven.
The Titans out-shot Heidelberg 60.3% (35-58) to 40.0% (30-75) and held a 48-34 rebound edge.
Westminster will travel to Hiram College on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. start time.
