ERIE, Pa. - The Westminster College women's soccer team faced a juggernaut in its second game of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament on Saturday. The Titans were shutout by undefeated Calvin, 2-0, after the teams were scoreless through nearly 78 minutes of play. Westminster (2-3-1) completes the weekend tournament hosted by Penn State Behrend with two losses, after Friday night's double-overtime loss to the host Lions, 1-0.
Calvin (7-0) out-shot the Titans, 16-6, including 10 in the second half. The deciding goal came at 79:58 when Jill Capel beat Titan freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Mellott (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) on an assist from Leah Scholten.
Mellott made eight saves while Calvin netminder Alyssa Bergsma got the shutout with four saves.
The Titans were one goal away from tying the score late in the game, but Elizabeth Ribbens booted an unassisted insurance goal in the 88th minute.
Westminster's six shots came from three players as senior forward Sarah Calderone (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson), junior forward Mallory Bugel (Valencia, Pa./Mars) and sophomore midfielder Abby Montgomery (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) all attempted two shots.
The Titans, who have scored just one goal in their last four games, return to action when they host St. Vincent on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m.
