Westminster goes 1-1 Saturday

LATROBE, Pa.--The Westminster women's volleyball team split a pair matches Saturday at Saint Vicent's Bearcat Invitational, winning in three against Wooster before dropping a five-setter to Penn State Behrend.

Westminster defeated Wooster 25-13, 25-19 and 25-21 before falling to Wooster 25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 12-25 and 12-15.

Westminster 3, Wooster 0
The Titans finished with 40 kills and hit .255 in the straight-set win.

After a 6-6 tie, senior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) served an ace and sophomore Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) followed with a kill from junior Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) to move the Titans ahead 8-6. The Titans widened the gap with O'Brien at the service line, scoring four straight points from 11-8 to 15-8, and later reached 22-10 on freshman Violet Seaman's (Hartville, Ohio, Lake) ace before taking the set 25-13.

The Titans held off Wooster's late push in the second set, answering after Wooster cut the score to 21-19 with the final four points of a 25-19 set win. Senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) served the closing sequence, which included a Wooster service error, a bad set and back-to-back blocks by Trent on attack errors. Earlier, the Titans created separation with four straight points on O'Brien's serve, getting kills from junior Dakota Hershberger (Belleville, Pa., Mifflin County) and Anthony.

The Titans broke a 21-21 tie by scoring the final four points of the third set, with O'Brien putting down two kills and Anthony adding one. Davis assisted O'Brien's kills, and O'Brien set up Anthony before a Wooster attack error finished the Titans' 25-21 set win.

Hershberger led the Titans with a season-high 11 kills while hitting .478. O'Brien finished with a season-high 21 assists, six kills on .308 hitting, and nine digs. Trent recorded eight kills, 10 digs, two solo blocks, and an ace. Junior Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) collected 11 digs and converted both of her attacks, hitting 1.000 with two kills.

Penn State Behrend 3, Westminster 2
The Titans won the first and third sets but were held to 12 points in each of the final two, with set scores of 25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 12-25, 12-15.

Westminster moved in front late in the first set, turning an 18-16 deficit into a 22-19 lead behind Davis' back-to-back service aces and kills from O'Brien and Seaman. Anthony added a kill for 23-20 lead, and the Titans closed the set on a Seaman ace and a Behrend attack error for a 25-20 win.

In the second set, the Titans rallied from a 12-5 deficit, with senior Zoie Reid (Salem, Ohio, Salem) putting down four kills as the Titans cut Behrend's lead to 14-12. Seaman's service turn later helped the Titans move from 16-14 down to a 17-16 lead, with Hershberger recording two kills and Trent adding one in that stretch. After the Titans went ahead 22-18 on a Reid kill, Behrend answered to tie it at 22-22 and eventually took the set, 26-24.

In the third set, the Titans answered Behrend's 12-10 lead with seven straight points, moving ahead 17-12 behind a Davis service ace, back-to-back Trent kills and an O'Brien kill. The Titans kept control from there, with Reid adding late kills before sophomore Halle Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) closed the set with a service ace for a 25-18 finish.

The Titans could not recover after Behrend built separation in the fourth set, falling 25-12. Reid supplied three kills, including the Titans' first two points, while Trent added two kills during the early sideout stretch. The Titans got three straight points to move to 11-19, but Behrend took six of the final seven points to finish the set.

In the fifth set, the Titans stayed within reach late, getting an O'Brien kill and a Reid kill to move from 13-9 to 13-11 before Behrend reached set point. Reid answered with another kill from Davis to make it 14-12, but an attack error ended the set at 15-12 for Behrend.

Reid led the Titans with a career-high 17 kills and 17.0 points while hitting .289. Trent added 15 kills and 11 digs. Gecina collected 23 digs. Davis finished with a career-high 27 assists, three service aces and nine digs. O'Brien recorded a season-high total of 15 digs.
