Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Westminster goes 1-1 Friday

ERIE, Pa.--The Westminster women's volleyball team went 1-1 Friday to open its two-day run at the Penn State Behrend Invitational. The Titans opened with a 3-1 loss to host Behrend before bouncing back with a 3-1 win over Utica.

Penn State Behrend 3, Westminster 1
The Titans rallied from a four-point deficit to win the opening set 25-23, but finished with set scores of 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 17-25.

After senior Zoie Reid's (Salem, Ohio, Salem) kill stopped a four-point Behrend stretch, sophomore Halle Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) served five straight Titans points, including back-to-back aces, as the visitors moved in front. Behrend pulled even, but freshman Violet Seaman (Hartville, Ohio, Lake) answered with a kill and a service ace before freshman Stephanie Strenk (Avoca, Mich., Yale) added a kill in the Titans' closing push. The Titans finished off the opening set 25-23.

The Titans were hurt by a 10-point Behrend stretch after senior Liv Trent's (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) service ace, a run that included two service aces and pushed the set away from the Titans. Trent added three kills in the set, while junior Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) had two kills and later a service ace as the Titans continued to answer in spots. Behrend took the second set 25-19.

Trailing 23-14 late in the third, Westminster strung together five-straight points, capped by junior Brooke Gecina's (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) service ace, before Behrend answer with the set's final two points.

The Titans could not sustain enough side-out pressure in the fourth set, as Behrend won 25-17. Trent had multiple kills for the Titans, with senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) assisting, while O'Brien, Strenk and Renner also added kills and Gecina served an ace.

Trent led the Titans with 11 kills and added 10 digs and a service ace. O'Brien finished with 21 assists, 17 digs, six kills, two aces and two block assists. Gecina collected a team-high 18 digs and added two service aces. Davis recorded 10 assists and eight digs while converting her only attack.

Westminster 3, Utica 1
The Titans opened the first set with seven straight points on Davis' serve, including consecutive aces and an O'Brien kill. After Utica closed to within two, 12-10, the Titans answered with six straight points to move ahead 18-10, with sophomore Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) recording three kills during that stretch and Seaman adding an ace. The Titans finished the set 25-16 on a Seaman kill from Davis.

In the second set, the Titans turned a 10-9 edge into a 17-9 lead with seven straight points, six of them on Anthony's serve. O'Brien had two kills during the stretch, Trent added one and Anthony served an ace as the Titans built the margin it needed in a 25-19 set win. O'Brien closed the set with a kill from Davis.

The Titans stayed close in the third set, but Utica answered with five straight points to push the margin to 22-14. Earlier, Davis opened the set with an ace, Trent put down a pair of kills, and O'Brien's ace helped the Titans move ahead 7-5. Utica finished the set 25-18.

In the fourth set, the Titans pulled away by turning a 16-15 edge into a 23-16 lead, with O'Brien, Seaman and Reid recording kills during that stretch. Earlier, the Titans scored six straight points to move ahead 10-2 before Utica answered to tie the set at 10-10. The Titans finished the set 25-18.

O'Brien recorded 16 kills, 17 assists, 14 digs and one service ace. Anthony added 14 kills on a .300 hitting percentage, 10 digs and two aces. Gecina collected 31 digs and added two service aces. Davis finished with 29 assists, four aces and 10 digs.
