Titans take two at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio--The Westminster baseball team opened its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule Saturday with a pair of victories over Franciscan at Vaccaro Field, rolling to a 14-5 win in game one before earning a 5-4 come-from-behind triumph in game two. 

Westminster improved to 10-4 this season. 

Game 1: Westminster 14, Franciscan 5
Junior right-hander Tyson Djakovich (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) went 8.0 strong innings to claim the game one win, allowing two runs (1 earned) on 15 hits with a walk and a strikeout on a season-high 102 pitches. Freshman lefty Tyler Benford (Fairview, Pa., Fairview) struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth.

Junior Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) and sophomore Aaron Jones (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius) each had three hits at the top of the lineup. Marquis went 3-for-6 with a double, a home run, an RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. His solo shot in the ninth was his first collegiate home run. Marquis has six mult-hit games this year. Jones was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Sophomore Ian Temple (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base while junior Nate Demchak (Monroeville, Pa., Gateway) was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

Game 2: Westminster 5, Franciscan 4
Junior Braden Zeigler's (New Castle, Pa., Shenango) two-out, RBI double in the ninth capped the Titans' game two comeback. 

Sophomore right-hander Ty Carrier (New Bethlehem, Pa., Redbank Valley) provided 4.0 innings of relief to pick up his second win of the year, allowing one run (unearned) on five hits with three strikeouts. Senior lefty Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) took the no-decision, allowing three runs (3 earned) on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. 

Sophomore Jack Strausser (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) went 2-for-4 with a walk. His RBI double in the seventh cut Franciscan's lead to one, 3-2, and extended his hitting streak to eight-straight games. Marquis went 1-for-5 with an RBI double in the seventh. 

Up next:
Westminster will host Grove City Tuesday. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
