Westminster doubles up Muskingum Thursday

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Behind a terrific start by senior right-hander Jonathan Mollo (Germantown, N.Y., Germantown Central), the Westminster baseball team earned a 6-3 victory over Muskingum Thursday afternoon.

The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday in New Concord, Ohio. Westminster improved to 8-4 with the win. 

Mollo fired 5.0 strong innings to record his first win at Westminster. He allowed three hits, striking out one and walking one. Sophomore righty Jack Strausser (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth before sophomore right-hander Ty Carrier (New Bethlehem, Pa., Redbank Valley) allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth to secure his second save of the year.

Westminster plated three runs in the fourth on sophomore Nate Demchak's (Monroeville, Pa., Gateway) RBI single and a two-run double by junior Conner Adams (Wellsboro, Pa., Wellsboro). Sophomore Aaron Jones (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius) led off the fifth with a home run to center, the first of his career.

Muskingum scored twice in the sixth and added another in the seventh to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Junior Braden Zeigler (New Castle, Pa., Shenango) delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh before sophomore Tom Rook (Clarence Center, N.Y., Clarence) smacked an RBI single to left center that scored sophomore Ian Temple (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford), who reached on a base hit earlier in the inning. 

Rook went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. It was his third multi-hit effort in the last four games. Demchak was 3-for-4 with and RBI and a run scored. It was the first three-hit game of his career. Adams finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Westminster opens its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule Saturday at Franciscan (0-6). The opening pitch from Vaccaro Field in Steubenville, Ohio is scheduled for 1 p.m.
