Westminster edged in PAC title game

WASHINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster men's basketball team suffered a 68-61 loss to Washington & Jefferson in the title game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Saturday night inside the Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

Westminster, the No. 1 seed in the PAC's North Division, wrapped up its first season under head coach David Richards with a 19-9 record. W&J, the top seed in the PAC's South Division, improved to 22-6 with Saturday night's win. The Presidents earned the league's automatic bid to the Division III Championship, with the selections announced on Monday.

Saturday's title game featured seven ties and 11 lead changes.

Graduate student DJ Harrell (Cleveland, Ohio, East Technical) led all scorers with 18 points before exiting with an injury with just under 12 minutes remaining. Senior Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) totaled 16 points and six rebounds while freshman Lucas Stanley (New Castle, Pa., Union) added 11 points and seven boards. Harrell and Stanley were named to the league's All-Tournament Team Saturday night.

Matthew Carte and Matt Seidl scored 16 points apiece for W&J. Nathan Plotner added 14 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

Westminster went into the break up one, 31-30. Harrell pushed the Titans' lead to seven, 46-39, after drilling a three-pointer with 13:44 remaining. W&J's 14-6 run over the next eight-and-a-half minutes evened the score at 53-all with just over five minutes to go. Weir's layup with 4:10 left put Westminster in front by two, 58-56, but the Presidents went 10-of-13 from the free throw line in the final four-plus minutes to secure the seven-point title game win. W&J started the second half 2-of-6 from the line and finished 15-of-25.

Westminster shot 40.8 percent (20-49) from the floor and made a season-low three three-pointers (3-of-19). The Titans were 0-of-9 on their three-point attempts in the first half. Westminster finished with a 33-29 edge on the glass.
