Westminster splits Saturday twinbill to open season

HARRISONBURG, Va.--The Westminster baseball team opened its season with a split at Eastern Mennonite Saturday, earning a 2-1 game one victory before falling in game two 7-4.

Game 1
Senior Andrew Wolf (Dillsburg, Pa., Northern York) went 3-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and a stolen base. Trailing 1-0 after six, sophomore Ian Temple's (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) two-out double scored junior Braden Zeigler (New Castle, Pa., Shenango), who had a one-out base hit earlier in the frame. Wolf followed up with his RBI triple. Sophomore Aaron Jones (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius) had a pair of hits in the win.

Junior right-hander Tyson Djakovich (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) went 5.2 innings in the no-decision, giving up one run (earned) on three hits with four strikeouts. Senior Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) earned the win in relief of Djakovich, allowing two hits with a strikeout in 2.1 innings. Sophomore Ty Carrier (New Bethlehem, Pa., Redbank Valley) got the final three outs to secure the first save of his career, striking out a pair.

Game 2
Zeigler finished 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. His run-producing double in the sixth tied the game at 3-all. Eastern Mennonite (3-3) sent eight men to the plate in its three-run seventh before Zeigler cut the deficit to two with his two-out solo home run in the eighth. It was his first since hitting a solo home run in a 5-3 loss at Mount Union on April 14, 2024. The Royals tacked on their seventh run in the bottom of the inning.

Senior right-hander Tyler Staub (Edinburg, Pa., Union) took the loss, allowing three runs (0 earned) on two hits and a walk in one-third of an inning. Junior righty Jon Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) threw 3.0 innings in the no-decision, giving up three runs (2 earned) on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Westminster finished with 10 hits in the game two setback. Junior Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) had two hits, including a leadoff triple. Freshman Breckin Minich (New Bethlehem, Pa., Redbank Valley) went 2-for-3 with an RBI while junior Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
