Westminster falls in season opener

LATROBE, Pa.--The Westminster men's lacrosse program suffered a 13-8 season-opening loss to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon at UPMC Field. 

Sophomore Ethan Kurtz (Hummelstown, Pa., Lower Dauphin) had a pair of goals while freshman Brendan Robinson (Gainesville, Va., Gainesville) scored once and added a pair of assists. Sophomore Paul DiPasquale (Woodbine, Md., Glenelg) finished with two assists. Westminster finished with 10 point scorers. 

Sophomore Jack Poller (Huntington, N.Y., Harborfields) totaled four ground balls while senior Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) finished with an assist, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Jack Steimle (Mount Sinai, N.Y., Mount Sinai) went 12-of-21 from the faceoff circle while junior Jorden Tate (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) record nine saves.

Down 6-1 at the half, the Titans outscored the Bearcats 4-1 in the third to pull to within two, 7-5, going into the fourth. Kurtz and senior Kyler Nigliazzo (Montgomery, Texas, Magnolia West) scored goals in a nine-second span to tie the game at 8-all with just under 13-and-a-half minutes to play. Saint Vincent scored the game's final five goals.  

Saint Vincent outshot Westminster 40-35 and had a 22-20 edge in shots on goal. Westminster went 24-of-28 on clears while Saint Vincent was 28-of-31.

Up next:
Westminster will open its home schedule Tuesday afternoon against Marietta. The opening faceoff on the UPMC Sports Complex is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Pioneers open their season Sunday against Thiel.
