Weir's double-double powers Westminster past Pitt-Greensburg

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Behind senior Drew Weir's (Salem, Ohio, Salem) 22-point, 13-rebound double-double, Westminster earned an 88-79 victory over previously unbeaten Pitt-Greensburg Saturday evening at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

The game featured three ties and 15 lead changes. Saturday was Westminster's sixth-straight win over Pitt-Greensburg.

The double-double was Weir's third this season. He went 7-of-12 from the floor, including a 3-of-6 clip from three-point range, and made five of nine free throw attempts. Graduate student DJ Harrell (Cleveland, Ohio, East Technical) finished with 21 points and six rebounds, marking his fourth game this year with 20 or more points in a game. Seniors Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) and Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) fired in 17 points each. DePietro went 8-of-13 from the field and added six boards while Hergenrother was 6-of-9 from the field, including going 5-of-7 from beyond the three-point line, and adding seven assists and six steals.

Matthew Marinchak scored 19 points to lead Pitt-Greensburg (11-1).

Westminster (6-5), trailing 14-10 with 14:32 to go in the first, outscored Pitt-Greensburg 16-5 over the next four-plus minutes to snag a 26-19 lead. Weir knocked down two of his three three-pointers during the stretch. Michael Bigley split a pair of free throws with under a minute left in the opening half to cut Westminster's lead to two, 41-39, before Harrell's pull-up jumper with 15 seconds to go send the Titans into the break up four, 43-39.

Weir and Harrell had 13 points apiece in the first half.

Matthew Marinchak's three with under eight-and-a-half minutes left in the second pulled Pitt-Greensburg to within three, 61-58. Westminster responded by outscoring the Bobcats 17-5 over the next 4:49 to stretch its lead to 15, 78-63. DePietro had seven and Hergenrother hit a pair of three-pointers during the spurt. Westminster carried a double-digit lead until the final 20 seconds of the game.

Westminster finished shooting 51.5 percent (35-68) from the floor and owned a commanding plus-20 (47-27) rebounding margin, its highest since outrebounding Bethany 42-22 in an 87-69 home victory on Feb. 4, 2023.
