Westminster claims 74-58 win over Geneva

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Senior Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) finished with 20 points and seven rebounds Wednesday night to lead Westminster to a 74-58 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Geneva at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster and Geneva entered Wednesday's game tied for first place in the PAC North Division. It was the program's first win over Geneva in New Wilmington since its 75-70 overtime victory on Dec. 11, 2021.

The Titans improved to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in league play with the win.

Wednesday was DePietro's second 20-point effort this season. He scored a career-high 30 in a 77-67 win over Thiel on Dec. 6. Graduate student DJ Harrell (Cleveland, Ohio, East Technical) had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Freshman Nick Ryan (Warren, Ohio, John F. Kennedy) added 10 points.

Jonathan Bertovich led Geneva (7-9, 4-3 PAC) with 14 points.

Senior Alex Rothwell (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) converted a traditional three-point play with just under 10 minutes left in the half to cap an 8-0 run and put Westminster up three, 16-13. DePietro's layup with under a minute to go stretched the Titans' lead to 10, 30-20, going into the break.

Bertovich's turnaround jumper with 14:19 remaining cut Geneva's second half deficit to nine, 43-34, before a three-pointer from senior Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) with 10:18 to go capped a 10-2 surge and stretched the Titans' lead to 17, 53-36. A Hergenrother layup with under four minutes left pushed the Westminster lead to 18, 67-49. Harrell went 5-of-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to help preserve the 16-point conference win.

DePietro and Harrell combined for 27 second half points on 8-of-16 shooting. The pair combined to go 10-of-14 from the line in the second half.

Westminster finished shooting 43.1 percent (25-58) from the field and went 17-of-23 (.739) from the free throw line. Defensively, it was the fourth game this year holding an opponent to 60 points or less.

Up next:
Westminster will travel to Greene County Saturday to take on Waynesburg (6-10, 2-5 PAC). Tipoff inside the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse is set for 3 p.m. Waynesburg suffered an 85-77 loss to visiting Bethany Wednesday evening.
