Women's program earns United Soccer Coaches team academic award

KANSAS CITY, Mo.--The Westminster College women's soccer program recently earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2024-25 academic year.

The multi-divisional award recognizes teams for their exemplary performance in the classroom during the last academic year.

Led by 24th-year head coach Girish Thakar, this is the 12th time Westminster's women's program received the award. The Titans finished with a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.39.

A total 414 women's programs posted a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Westminster was one of 151 schools that had both its men's and women's programs recognized. Westminster was also one of eight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) women's programs to receive the team academic award, joining Allegheny, Chatham, Franciscan, Grove City, Hiram, Thiel and Waynesburg.

Westminster posted a 9-0-1 PAC regular record to earn the top seed in last year's PAC Championship Tournament, falling to No. 2 Grove City 4-3 in the title game to finish the year 11-6-1. Senior Morgan Murphy (Yardley, Pa., Villa Joseph Marie), a goalkeeper, was named PAC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-PAC for the third-straight year. She started 17 matches in 2024, going 10-6-1. Her .790 save percentage ranked third in the PAC while her 1.65 goals-against average (GAA) ranked fifth. Murphy had five shutouts last fall. Last November Murphy, along with 2025 graduates Brooke Horvath (Murrysville, Pa., Franklin Regional) and Gabby Hunter (New Baltimore, Mich., Anchor Bay), were named to the United Soccer Coaches Division III All-Region VII Team.

Thakar was voted the PAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time (2002, 2005, 2006) in his career.

The Titans will open the season at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29 in Cresson, Pa. at Mount Aloysius.
