DePietro nets 30 in PAC triumph over Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Senior Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) erupted for a career-high 30 points Saturday to propel Westminster to a 77-67 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Thiel at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Four players scored in double figures for Westminster (4-3, 1-1).

DePietro finished 12-of-18 from the field, 2-of-3 from three-point range and hit all four free throw attempts. He added three rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. DePietro's previous career high was 29 points, scored in a 77-69 win over Thiel on Dec. 2, 2023. Senior Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) registered a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double, his second of the season and fifth of his career. Freshman Nick Ryan (Warren, Ohio, John F. Kennedy) had 14 points and four boards and graduate student DJ Harrell (Cleveland, Ohio, East Technical) added 12 points, five rebounds and six assists. Harrell has scored in double figures in all seven games this season.

Khamari Accursio-Harris led Thiel (4-5, 1-1) with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

A 10-point run five minutes in saw Thiel erase Westminster's early 5-0 start with a 10-5 swing. The Tomcats stretched their lead to as many as nine, 27-18, with just under nine to go in the first. Weir evened the game at 30-all with a three-pointer at the 3:23 mark before the visitors headed into the break up four, 38-34. Accursio-Harris netted 12 of his 18 in the first half. DePietro scored a dozen first half points.

Accursio-Harris drilled a three-pointer to push the Tomcats' lead to five, 43-38, two-and-a-half minutes into the second before Westminster strung together 11-straight points and forced Thiel into 10-straight misses over next four-plus minutes to go up six, 49-43, with 13:28 left. Thiel managed to chisel away at Westminster's 65-51 lead with an 11-1 run, trimming the Titans' advantage to three, 66-63, with just under four minutes left.  DePietro's second three of the game extended the lead to six, 69-63, with 2:45 to go. His layup with 31 seconds left closed out the scoring. DePietro went 7-of-11 from the floor and scored 18 second half points.

Westminster outscored Thiel 40-24 in paint points. The Tomcats finished with a 42-33 edge on the glass.
