Women's basketball picked fourth in North Division in PAC preseason coaches' poll

TRAFFORD, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the North Division in this year's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll. The results of this year's poll, which was voted on by the league's 12 head coaches, were released along with the PAC Players to Watch list Tuesday morning. 

In the North, Allegheny was picked to finish first with 66 points and 11 first-place votes. Grove City was second with 54 points and the final first-place vote. Geneva was third (42), Westminster fourth (34), Hiram fifth (32) and Thiel sixth (18). 

In the South, defending champion Washington & Jefferson was first with 65 points and 10 first-place votes. Chatham was second with 57 points and the final two first-place votes. Bethany was third (40), Saint Vincent fourth (36), Waynesburg fifth (32) and Franciscan sixth (16). 

Westminster had four players on the player's to watch list: Junior guard Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) and junior forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) with sophomore guards Katie Grexa (Hartford, Ohio, Badger) and Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park). Last season, Arison started all 25 games and averaged 5.4 points, 3.2 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game. Cano played in all 25 games and made 17 starts, averaging 9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Syka played in 19 games with one start, averaging 12.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Grexa joined the program this fall after a year at Lake Erie. 

The PAC Championship Tournament will also expand this year, as eight teams--the top four from each division--qualify for the conference playoffs. The tournament will get underway on Tuesday, Feb. 24 with the top two seeds from each division hosting quarterfinal games. Semifinal games will be played Thursday, Feb. 26 and the PAC title game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 28. All PAC Championship Tournament matchups will be played at campus sites. This year's championship tournament winner will receive the league's automatic qualifying bid to the Division III Championship. Team selections for the Division III Championship are scheduled to be announced Monday, March 2, with first and second round matchups scheduled for Friday-Saturday, March 6-7.  

Westminster begins its season this weekend at the annual Teammates For Life Tip-off Tournament. This year's event is being hosted by Manchester. The Titans open against the host Spartans Saturday at 5:30 p.m. inside the Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
