Brown fires perfect game in Senior Day sweep

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College earned a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep of Thiel College Friday afternoon. Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio | East Liverpool) fired a perfect game to help the Titans claim a 1-0 win in the opener before the offense exploded for 16 hits in a 9-1 (5 inn.) game two victory.

Westminster moved to 24-10 overall and 13-3 in conference play. Thiel fell to 6-23 overall and 2-14 in the PAC.

Westminster returns to action on Wednesday, April 26 at Chatham University. The first pitch at West Field in Munhall is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Game 1: Westminster 1, Thiel 0
Brown was electric in her game one start, eliminating 21 batters with just 64 pitches and striking out six. She improved to 10-6 this season.

Senior center fielder Brooke Atkins (New Castle, Pa. | Laurel) became the program's all-time hits leader with her RBI single in the third. It was the 166th hit of her career, surpassing Bethany Pinkerton's (1998-2001) 165 career hits.

Senior right fielder Emma Gurley (Painesville, Ohio | Gilmore Academy) went 2-for-2. Sophomore catcher Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa. | Dubois Central Catholic) was 1-for-2 with a double.

Game 2: Westminster 9, Thiel 1 (5 inn.)
Westminster posted four runs in the first inning and four more in the third to jump out to an 8-0 lead.

Junior pitcher Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, Pa. | Grove City), the fifth batter to reach base in the first, followed up a run-scoring double by senior first baseman Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa. | Laurel) with a two-run triple. It was Malczak's third triple this season. Gurley's single to center later in the inning capped the scoring in the first.

Senior second baseman Mia Greco (New Castle, Pa. | Neshannock) highlighted Westminster's four-run fourth with a three-run base hit. Greco's hit scored Meholick, who walked, along with sophomore designated player Sarah Eisenhuth (Harrison City, Pa. | Penn-Trafford) and Gurley, who both singled. Gurley got the scoring underway with an RBI bunt single that scored Latess, who led off the frame with a triple.

Thiel scratched out a run in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 8-1, but Meholick's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the inning pushed the lead back to eight runs.

Senior Abbegail Froehlich (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Plum) replaced Malczak in the top of the fifth and retired the side.

Malczak ran her season record to 12-3 with the win in Friday's nightcap. She allowed one run (1 earned) on three hits with one strikeout.

Latess paced Westminster offensively, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, and RBI and three runs scored. Gurley was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Greco, Atkins and senior shortstop Alexis Yates (Oakdale, Pa. | South Fayette) each had two hits.
