Westminster records sweep at Chatham

MUNHALL, Pa.--The Westminster College softball team rolled to a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep over Chatham University Wednesday night at West Field, posting a 16-7 game one victory before earning a 10-5 win in game two. 

Winners of four straight, Westminster is now 26-10 overall and 15-3 in conference play. It was the program's sixth PAC sweep this season. Chatham fell to 11-23 overall and 6-12 in the PAC. 

Westminster closes its regular season Saturday at Waynesburg University. The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. 

Game 1: Westminster 16, Chatham 7
The Titans rolled up five runs on four hits and error in the top of the third to break a scoreless tie. Westminster added three more runs in the fourth, keyed by a two-run single by senior left fielder Ashley Wire (Poland, Ohio | Poland Seminary), to stretch its lead to 8-0. Chatham's Isabelle Griswold opened the fourth inning with a solo home run before the Cougars plated five runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-6. 

Westminster hung another four runs in the sixth, with Wire's RBI double opening the scoring in the frame. The Titans scored four more times in the seventh, wire Wire drawing a bases-loaded walk to register the first run of the inning. 

Wire finished 2-for-3 with two walks, a double, five RBIs, four runs scored and a stolen base. Senior first baseman Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa. | Laurel) went 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly, four RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore catcher Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa. | Dubois Central Catholic) went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. 

Senior center fielder Brooke Atkins (New Castle, Pa. | Laurel) and senior shortstop Alexis Yates (Oakdale, Pa., South Fayette) each went 4-for-5. 

Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio | East Liverpool) improved to 11-6 this season in the circle. She allowed six runs (5 earned) on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Senior Abbegail Froehlich (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Plum) threw 2.2 relief innings, allowing one run (earned) on three hits with one strikeout. 

Game 2: Westminster 10, Chatham 5
Junior Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, Pa. | Grove City) ran her season record to 13-3 with the complete game win in game two. She allowed five runs (4 earned) on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Westminster posted five runs in the first and added two more in the second. In the first, Latess had an RBI double before Malczak's RBI groundout. Latess later scored on an errant throw. Wire smacked a two-out, two-run triple in the second. 

Latess delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth to put Westminster ahead 6-0. Junior catcher Alyssa Stock (New Brighton, Pa. | New Brighton) capped a two-run fifth inning with a sacrifice fly that pushed the Titans' lead to 8-1. Chatham tacked on its second run in the sixth.

Yates ripped a two-run triple in the top of the eighth, extending Westminster's lead to 10-2. Chatham scratched out three runs on three hits and three errors in the bottom of the seventh. 

Yates and Atkins both went 3-for-5. Yates had a triple, two RBIs and a run scored while Atkins scored a pair of runs and stole a base. Latess went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Senior right fielder Emma Gurley (Painesville, Ohio | Gilmore Academy) had two hits, scored two runs and stole a base.
