BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Westminster softball team swept the defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion Geneva in dominant fashion on the road Thursday.
"All three areas of the game were working today," said head coach
Jan Reddinger. "Pitching, hitting and defense. Both Maddy and Liz buckled down and held a very good hitting team in check.
Mackenzie Latess started the long ball rally and Lexi Yates led us in two very good defensive games."
Westminster (17-2, 4-0 PAC) won game one, 10-2, followed with a 9-2 game two victory, while totaling five home runs on the day.
The Titans had three home runs in the first game, the most in 13 years since Titan Sports Hall of Famer Jennifer Emery hit three homers at Saint Vincent on Apr 16, 2009.
The Titans were down 1-0 in the first game, before scoring 10 unanswered runs. Junior
Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) and first-year
Mia Meholick (Dubois, PA / Dubois Central Catholic) both registered a game-high three RBIs. Westminster had a total of five extra-base hits, including a home run by Latess, junior
Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local), and sophomore
Savannah Weller (Birdsboro, PA / Daniel Boone Area) (Weller's first of her collegiate career). Senior
Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) improved to 8-1 on the mound, after throwing a complete game and striking out six.
In the nightcap, once again Geneva (10-8, 0-2 PAC) took an early 1-0 lead, however history repeated itself as Westminster responded in the second with a home run by Latess – her second of the day and third of the season. The Titans did not look back. Junior
Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel) connected on a three-run shot in the sixth for Westminster's fifth homer of the day. Sophomore pitcher
Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City) also improved to 8-1 in a complete-game performance, striking out three.
The Titans will next travel to Thiel for a PAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 9. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
