NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster softball team swept Pitt-Greensburg at home in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The Titans won game one 2-0 and game two 7-1.
Â
"That was a good pitcher we faced," said head coach
Jan Reddinger. "Looking at her stats from past games, a lot of the games she pitched were 1-0 games and 2-1. We knew it would be close. I would have liked to get to her earlier, but we did eventually. A win is a win at this point."
Â
In the bottom of the sixth in game one, Westminster (11-2) took the lead after junior
Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) batted-in junior
Emma Gurley (Painesville, OH / Gilmore Academy), followed by a double from
Mia Meholick (Dubois, PA / Dubois Central Catholic) that scored
Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel). On the mound, senior
Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) earned the complete-game win with a game-best four strikeouts.
Â
"Madison is the kid that will go back into the gym and get it going," said Reddinger. "It is nice to have someone like that. You can relax a little bit when they are pitching."
Â
Game two was highlighted by the third inning as the Titans scored three runs, capped by sophomore
Elizabeth Malczak's (Grove City, PA / Grove City) single that brought Latess across home plate (4-0). Malczak earned her fifth win of the season with a game-high three strikeouts.
Â
Westminster was led by Latess, who went a combined 3-for-6 with five runs-batted-in. Atkins collected four hits on the day, while scoring three times. Gurley notched two hits in game two. Meholick finished the day with two hits with a pair of runs-batted-in.
Â
The Titans are back in action Saturday, April 1 as they host Washington and Jefferson in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
