Softball: Titans Sweep W&J in PAC Opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster softball team swept Washington and Jefferson at home in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener in a doubleheader. The Titans won game one 5-0 and game two 10-2.

"Everyone worked together," said head coach Jan Reddinger. "It was definitely a team effort today. All over the lineup hit at certain times. Everyone pitched in today."

Game one was highlighted by the fifth inning as Westminster (13-2, 2-0 PAC) scored three runs. Junior Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) singled to left center, which brought classmate Emma Gurley (Painesville, OH / Gilmore Academy) cross home plate (3-0). First-year Mia Meholick (Dubois, PA / Dubois Central Catholic) sacrifice flied to bat-in juniors Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel) and Ashley Wire (Poland, OH / Poland Seminary). On the mound, senior Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) collected her seventh win in a complete-game effort with a game-best eight strikeouts (tied a season-high).

In game two, the Titans were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the third and controlled the lead for the remainder of the game. Gurley notched a two-run double in the fifth that batted-in Meholick and sophomore Alexis Petropoulos (Moon Twp., PA / Moon Area) to make it 5-1. Sophomore Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City) earned her sixth win of the season with 5.2 innings pitched, while tallying a pair of strikeouts.

Westminster was led by Atkins, who went a combined 5-for-7 with a run-batted-in. Gurley went 2-for-3 in game two with three runs-batted-in. Meholick and first-year Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, PA / Norwin) both collected two hits in game two. Junior Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) registered two runs-batted-in during game two. Pancake went 2-for-3 with a run-batted in during game one.

The Titans are back in action Monday, April 4 as they host Penn State Behrend in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
