MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Westminster softball team earned its second-straight sweep with a come-from-behind victory over UMass Boston, 9-6, in game one followed by another five-inning dominant win, 11-0, over Keystone in the second contest at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic.
"We needed that type of game, a game with adversity," said head coach
Jan Reddinger. "By coming back from a 6-0 deficit, the team showed they were willing to fight. It's a characteristic that we need this team to have."
UMass (0-1) took a 6-1 lead after three innings of play. Westminster (4-0) rallied in the bottom of the fourth with a seven-run inning. Junior
Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) tied the game, 6-6, with an RBI-single and would score the go-ahead run later in the inning. Sophomore pitcher
Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City) earned her second win of the season, after coming in for relief, with five scoreless inning and only allowing two hits in fiving innings of work. Junior
Emma Gurley (Painesville, OH / Gilmore Academy) went 3-for-3 with a team-high two RBIs and a triple.
Senior pitcher
Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) earned the complete game shutout over Keystone (1-1) in game two, while only allowing two hits and striking out seven. Junior
Ashley Wire (Poland, OH / Poland Seminary) went 3-for-3 with a team-best four RBIs, to go along with two runs scored. Also earning double-digit RBIs were junior
Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) and first-year
Mia Meholick (Dubois, PA / Dubois Area Catholic) with two each.
"Maddy shut down a very good hitting team," said Reddinger. "We were definitely expecting that game to be much closer. Maddy had great control of her pitches today."
The Titans will next play Wednesday, March 16 as they continue the Fastpitch Dreams Classic slate. Game one features Stevenson at 1:30 p.m., followed by Rutgers-Newark at 3:30 p.m.
