GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team swept Thiel College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on the road Saturday.
The Titans won game one, 3-1, and, were victorious, 7-2, in the second game.
In game one, Westminster (7-15, 4-7 PAC) took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the fifth inning; senior
Ty Ferlin (Latrobe, PA / Ligonier Valley) scored on a balk and junior
Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) singled home sophomore
Travis Lauster (Slippery Rock, PA / Slippery Rock). Thiel (11-9, 4-4 PAC) scored in the sixth inning to cut Westminster's lead to 2-1. Sophomore
Brad Stein (Boynton Beach, FL / Palm Beach Central) added insurance for the Titans with a run in the seventh. Salmen (3-1) pitched a complete game, while allowing no earned runs (one total) on two hits. He struck out six and walked four.
In the second game, the Titans led 5-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Ferlin got the scoring started with an RBI-single in the second inning, scoring Stein. Freshman
Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley) connected on a two-run double, his third double of the season, later in the second, bringing home Salmen and Ferlin. Junior
Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) made it 4-0 with an RBI-single, scoring Johnson. In the third, Johnson singled home senior
Kellen Gursky (Greenville, PA / Reynolds) for the fifth run. Thiel cut Westminster's lead to 5-2 with two runs in the third. Westminster added two more runs in the fifth; senior
Sean Coyne (New Castle, PA / New Castle) singled home Ferlin and Rossier scored Johnson with another single. Titan senior
Nate McMaster (Stow, OH / Stow-Munroe Falls) (3-1) pitched 6.1 innings and gave up two runs on eight hits, to go along with three strikeouts.
The Titans are back on the field Monday, April 10 with a home nine-inning game against Thiel College at 4 p.m.
