Baseball: Titans Swept at Home by Waynesburg

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team was swept in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader by Waynesburg University at home on Saturday.
 
The Titans lost game one, 11-8, and, fell, 10-3, in the second game.
 
In game one, Waynesburg (7-7, 2-1 PAC) was down 8-5 after six innings, but rallied in the top of the seventh with six runs. In the first inning, Titan senior Sean Coyne (New Castle, PA / New Castle) doubled home junior Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) to put Westminster (4-10, 1-2 PAC) in front 1-0. The Yellow Jackets took a 3-1 lead in the third inning, after Jonathon Kletzli connected on a three-run home run. The Titans regained the lead in the bottom of the third, however, Waynesburg tied the game, 5-5, with two runs in the fifth. Coyne homered, his first on the season, in the bottom of the fifth to give Westminster a 6-5 lead. The Titans extended their lead to 8-5 with two runs in the sixth; Salmen doubled home freshman Vince Guerrieri (Latrobe, PA / Greater Latrobe) and freshman Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley) had an RBI-single, bringing home Salmen. Senior pitcher Nate McMaster (Stow, OH / Stow-Munroe Falls) started the game and threw 6.0 innings, while giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits. He had one strike out and walked one. Sophomore Sam Hockenberry (Burgettstown, PA / Burgettstown) (0-1) came in for relief for 0.1 innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk. The Titans outhit the Yellow Jackets, 14-9. Salmen, Coyne, junior Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny), senior Ty Ferlin (Latrobe, PA / Ligonier Valley) each earned a double for the Titans, while Coyne and sophomore Michael Douds (Erie, PA / Cathedral Prep) both hit a home run.
 
In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets led 5-0 after Tyler Reis hit a two-run home run in the first inning and a three-run homer in the second. Titan freshman Connor Cox (Ridge, MD / Leonardtown) put the Titans on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI-double, scoring Rossier. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 7-1 with two more runs in the third inning. Douds connected on his second home run of the day in the fourth inning, bringing the score to 7-2. Waynesburg registered three runs in the sixth to take a 10-2 lead; Kletzli earned two of those runs with a home run. Sophomore Brad Stein (Boynton Beach, FL / Palm Beach Central) scored the final Titan run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, bringing home senior Jared Baummer (Reynoldsville, PA / Dubois). Waynesburg outhit Westminster, 12-7. Cox and Baummer each recorded a double. Sophomore Cody Acon (Industry, PA / Western Beaver) (0-1) pitched 1.2 innings, while giving up five runs on five hits and struck out one.
 
Westminster will next play at PAC foe Washington & Jefferson College on Tuesday, March 28 in a doubleheader. Game one is slated for 2 p.m.
