NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - A second-half shooting improvement was not enough for the Westminster College women's basketball team as the Titans lost 68-45 to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College at home on Wednesday.
The Titans shot 45.8% (11-24) from the field in the second half, improving from 21.4% (3-14) in the first.
Westminster (4-16, 3-10 PAC) led 4-0 after two successful trips to the free-throw line with 15:49 remaining in the first half. Grove City (8-12, 6-7 PAC) responded with a 7-0 run to take a 7-4 lead with 10:14 on the clock. The Titans tied the game (9-9) after sophomore Shelby Brown (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) found classmate Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lowellville) for a three-point field goal with 8:55 remaining. The Wolverines led 22-13 at halftime, their largest lead of the half.
In the second half, Westminster got within two points (24-22) of Grove City's lead when senior Allison Borts (Youngstown, OH / Boardman) made a jumper with 15:24 to play. That would be the closest the Titans would get for the remainder of the game.
Senior Jenna Grandy (Sharpsville, PA / Sharpsville) led the Titan offense with 12 points, while Durbin and Brown led on the glass with five rebounds each. Borts and Durbin added seven and six points, respectively. Durbin also had a team-high three steals.
Grove City had three players in double-figures, led by Kathryn Erbelding with 19 points. Natalija Galens and Kelsey Shirey scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The Wolverines out-shot the Titans 46.4% (26-56) to 36.8% (14-38) and out-rebounded Westminster 34-30.
The Titans are back on the court Saturday when they travel to Saint Vincent College. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
