Former Westminster baseball player and 1985 graduate Joe Jordano will enter yet another hall of fame tomorrow in his hometown of Erie, Pa. Jordano will be inducted into the Erie Metro Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame tomorrow, along with nine others. The event will take place at the Zem Zem Shrine Club in Erie. Last summer, Jordano was inducted into the Mercyhurst College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame.
Jordano played baseball and golf at Tech Memorial in Erie, and in 1981 he helped the Post 11 American Legion baseball team win the district championship and finish third in the state tournament. He was the Glenwood League MVP in 1982 and won the league's batting and home run titles in 1984 and 1988. As a player at Westminster, Jordano was a four-year letterman from 1982-85 under head coach Scott Renninger. An all-district selection and the only senior on the 1985 team, Jordano led the Titans in fielding average and putouts while batting .321 as a senior first baseman and relief pitcher.
His coaching career included a 283-118 record as Mercyhurst College baseball coach from 1988-1997. He was named Louisville Slugger coach of the year three times. Since 1998, he has coached the University of Pittsburgh baseball team to a 328-292-2 record and now ranks second in coaching victories. In 2004, he was named Big East coach of the year.
