Friday Feedback: 1970 Football Team Returns for Homecoming

Posted by Titan Sports Blogger

This is your Homecoming edition of Friday Feedback, which is a look ahead to the weekend, a look back at the week, and an opportunity for your feedback by e-mailing sportsinfo@westminster.edu. Send us an e-mail with a question or topic and we may address it in a future Friday Feedback.

What's great about having such a historically successful football program is the opportunity to recognize great teams each Homecoming. Some schools recognize the one or two undefeated teams or conference champions every 10 years or so, but at Westminster, with our six national champions, 11 undefeated regular seasons and 17 national playoff teams, it seems like every year we honor some of the all-time great teams as they celebrate anniversaries.

This year is no different. Celebrating their 40th anniversary, members of the 1970 NAIA Division II National Championship Westminster team will be recognized at halftime of tomorrow's football game vs. Bethany, which starts at 1 p.m. Those who have confirmed attendance are as follows: assistant coach Joe Fusco, assistant coach Gene Nicholson, co-captain Dave Bierbach, co-captain Fritz Tobias, Fred Blackhurst, Bill Cole, Scott McClester, Mark Acerni, Mark Connolly, Jack Downey, J.D. Ebersberger, Bill Fitts, Marvin Smith, Randall Bubb, Mitch Dukovich, Robert Greenham, Joe McCaw, Gene McNamara, Roger Neel, Bill Sweterlitsch, Ted Boron, Scott Colvin, Mark Freado, Dar Huey, Alex Stupakis, Darryl West, John Whitehead and Jon Yohe.

You can read more about the 1970 team, as well as view a team photo, in this week's game notes.

Elsewhere, the Class of 1960 is celebrating its 50th reunion and part of their gift to Westminster is helping fund the concession stand project on the Fusco Plaza. The construction of the concession stand began on July 22 and it just finished up this week. Take a look!

Former Westminster football play-by-play announcer and Coaches Corner host Denny Wolfe '97 is on campus today to accept the Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Wolfe is a Features Producer and Associate Producer at ESPN. We will be meeting with him this afternoon and there will be a feature story on Wolfe published on the Titan Sports Blog later this month.

The Titan volleyball team is in second place in the PAC after beating Saint Vincent Wednesday and it will travel to face first-place Thomas More Saturday in a tri-match with Bethany. Junior Jessie Szakacs reached a milestone as she became the eighth player in team history to post 2,000 assists. Junior Lindsay Speidel also crushed her previous career high in kills as she posted 24 vs. Saint Vincent. Only one other Titan player has recorded 24 kills in a match in at least the last six years and that was Sam Botzum who did in a five-set match last year. Wednesday's match went four sets.

In other action this week, the Westminster soccer teams didn't fare so well at Grove City this week, with the men losing 4-1 and the women losing 5-0. The men's golf team placed third as hosts of the Westminster Autumn Classic. The Titan women's tennis team had a pair of matches postponed this week but the team will play Penn State Behrend today.

In other action this weekend, the women's soccer team will play at Chatham today and host SUNY Geneseo Saturday on the grass field at 1 p.m., while the men will host Potomac State at 6 p.m. at Burry Stadium. The cross country team is at Carnegie Mellon.

Before you know it, the PAC championships and playoffs will be here. Women's tennis PACs are only two weeks away! The PAC office posted a great photo on its Facebook page. Let's hope some of that hardware will make its way to New Wilmington.

Have a great weekend!
