Men's Basketball: Titans Knock Off Defending PAC Champion Grove City

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's basketball team upset defending league champion Grove City, 82-60, at home Wednesday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action.

The Titans (4-15, 2-5 PAC) snapped their four-game losing streak by knocking off the Wolverines (12-7, 5-2 PAC), who entered the game a half game out of first place in the league standings.

Senior guard Craig Hannon (New Castle, Pa./Union) scored a season-high 33 points on 11-19 shooting from the floor and 7-14 shooting from 3-point range. Hannon moved up two spots and is now ranked fifth in school history with 1,577 career points, as he surpassed Mark DeMonaco (1,550 from 2003-06) and Rich Kunselman (1,574 from 1983-87) during the game. Hannon also led the Titans with nine rebounds as Westminster out-rebounded the Wolverines, 33-27.

Westminster made a season-high 20 3-pointers on 41 attempts for 48.8 percent. The Titans made just nine two-point shots as they were 29-54 (53.7 percent) from the field. Grove City shot 42.9 percent (27-63) from the field.

The Titans stormed to a 14-point, 22-8 lead eight minutes into the game and went up by as many as 20 points (38-18) with 4:04 left in the first half before holding a 42-27 halftime lead.

Westminster regained its 20-point lead with 13:42 to go in the game and never trailed by fewer than 17 points the rest of the game.

Other notables for Westminster included sophomore forward Ryne Murray (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) with 15 points and seven rebounds, senior guard/forward Chauncey Whitlow (Youngstown, Ohio/Woodrow Wilson) with 12 points, including 4-8 shooting from 3-point range, and junior guard David Richards (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) with a game-high six assists despite not cracking the scoring column.

Andy O'Keefe led Grove City with 16 points and six rebounds.

Westminster returns to action Saturday, Feb. 2, when the Titans host Thomas More for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
