NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster women's basketball team defeated Waynesburg, 60-43, Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
The Titans (18-5, 8-2 PAC) were slow out of the gates as they trailed by as many as seven point (21-14 with 6:47 left in the first half) and was tied 27-27 at halftime with the Yellow Jackets (8-13, 3-8 PAC). However, behind the 3-point shooting of senior guard Desiree Sterling (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls), Westminster was able to outscore Waynesburg, 33-16, in the second half and secure a comfortable win.
Sterling led all scorers with 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor including 6-8 from 3-point range. Sterling also tied for teams highs with four steals and six rebounds.
Westminster junior guard/forward Emilee Ackerman (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and freshman center Rachel Martinko (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) were the game's only other double-figure scorers as they bucketed 10 and 11 points, respectively.
Denise Kennedy led Waynesburg with nine points.
The Titans shot 48.1 percent (25-52) from the field, including 54.5 percent (6-11) from behind the arc. The Yellow Jackets were 34.5 percent (19-55) from the field and 21.1 percent from 3-point range (4-19).
Westminster returns to action for a PAC game at home against Thiel Wednesday, Feb. 14, beginning at 6 p.m.
