Late Punt Block Costly as Westminster Football Falls to 3-5 Following 16-13 Loss to Frostburg State

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Frostburg State blocked a punt with 33 seconds to play, setting up a game-winning 41-yard field goal by Mark Sedlock with 10 seconds to play as the Bobcats (5-3) posted a come-from-behind 16-13 non-conference win over Westminster College (3-5) today at Harold Burry Stadium.

Westminster controlled play for most of the opening quarter, as the Titans held the ball for 10:38 of the period. After taking the opening kickoff, Westminster marched 48 yards on nine plays culminating with a 31-yard field goal by senior K Chris Castillo (Austintown, OH/Austintown Fitch H.S.) for a 3-0 lead. Later in the quarter, the Titans built the lead to 6-0 by putting together a 13-play, 44-yard drive covering 6:14 that ended in a 39-yard Castillo field goal. FSU halved the lead to 6-3 midway through the second period, as the Bobcats ended a 14-play, 58-yard drive with a 32-yard Sedlock field goal.

In the second half, Frostburg was able to tie the game after taking the opening kickoff and putting together an 11-play, 44-yard drive. Sedlock again splitting the uprights from 32 yards out to tie the game 6-6, which was the score after three periods.

The Titans finally broke the touchdown drought on the first play of the fourth quarter, as freshman wide receiver Jordan Belosh (Edinboro/General McLane H.S.) hauled in an 11-yard scoring pass from junior QB J.R. Barley (Beaver Falls/Blackhawk H.S.). Castillo's extra-point conversion put Westminster back on top 13-6. The Bobcats answered with 5:22 remaining in the game on a 43-yard TD reception by wide receiver T.J. Changuris from quarterback Jimmy Ward to again tie the game, this time at 13-13. Westminster dodged a bullet late, as Frostburg intercepted a Titan pass and returned it to the Westminster 23-yard line with 2:24 to play, but a 43-yard field goal attempt by Sedlock missed wide left with 1:27 to play. The Titans moved the ball to their own 47 in the final minute, but faced with 4th-and-2 Westminster saw its punt attempt blocked by Mike Gray of Frostburg less than a minute to play, setting up Sedlock's game-winning heroics.

The two teams posted nearly identical statistics, as Westminster held a 17-14 advantage in first downs and a 249-247 margin in total yardage. For the Titans, senior RB Sean Buggey (Homer City/Homer-Center H.S.) led the way on the ground with 19 carries for 96 yards (5.1 avg.). Barley was 20-of-31 passing for 161 yards, but was sacked four times. Three Westminster players led the team with four receptions each: senior tight end Josh Bero (Poland, OH/Poland Seminary H.S.), junior wide receiver Jake Buzard (West Middlesex/West Middlesex H.S.), and freshman fullback Josh Weese (Lisbon, OH/Beaver Local H.S.).
