WASHINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster women's volleyball team earned a five-set victory at Washington & Jefferson Saturday in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener.
The teams traded set wins, with Westminster taking the first set, 25-20, the third, 25-19, and the deciding fifth set, 15-12. W&J won the second set, 25-21, and the fourth, 28-26. The Titans improved to 9-7 overall and 1-0 in PAC play, while W&J fell to 3-11 overall and 0-2 in PAC play.
Junior Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) registered her second triple-double of the season, totaling a career-high 22 kills, 25 assists and 10 digs. She added four block assists, two service aces and hit .426 (22-2-47). O'Brien had four triple-doubles in 2025.Â
Senior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood)Â posted a 19-kill, 21-dig double-double, and added two aces and two block assists. It was her sixth double-double this year. Junior Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) collected 37 digs and served two aces. It was her fourth match this season with 30 or more digs. Senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) dished out a career-high 32 assists while adding eight digs and an ace.
The Titans broke a 20-20 tie in the opening set by scoring the final five points. Trent put the Titans ahead with a kill and added another on the next point, and Davis followed with a service ace before the final point came on a block by a block by O'Brien and freshman Suzie Bishop (Ellwood City, Pa., Riverside).
The second set was even at 15-15 before W&J surged ahead to 22-17. The Titans had built an early 6-3 edge behind kills from O'Brien, sophomore Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) and Davis, plus an O'Brien service ace. The Titans added late points on an O'Brien kill, a block from Anthony and freshman Violet Seaman (Hartville, Ohio, Lake) and an Anthony kill, but the Presidents managed to close out the set, 25-21.
In the third set, the Titans answered a 4-3 deficit, using kills from Trent and Anthony to move back in front before Gecina's consecutive aces helped stretch the score to 9-5. The Titans didn't allow the Presidents to get closer than three the rest of the way, with O'Brien, Seaman and junior Dakota Hershberger (Belleville, Pa., Mifflin County) adding kills as the Titans closed out the set, 25-19.
A 17-15 fourth set deficit became a 20-18 Titans lead, with Trent and Hershberger contributing kills during the response. The Titans later reached set point at 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25, but W&J answered each time and scored the final two points to take the set 28-26.
After watching W&J tied the fifth at 11-11, Westminster scored four of the final five points to close out a 15-12 set. Trent answered with a kill from Davis, and O'Brien added two late kills off Davis assists, including the match point.Â
