Westminster splits a pair of matches at Penn State Behrend

ERIE, Pa.--The Westminster women's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Penn State Behrend Invitational, securing a 3-1 opening-match win over Fredonia State before falling in three to Muskingum. The Titans won by set scores of 25-23, 14-25, 25-21 and 25-12 against Fredonia State and fell 25-18, 25-18 and 25-17 to Muskingum.

The Titans are now 5-4 overall.

Westminster 3, Fredonia State 1
Westminster totaled 51 kills and hit .469 in the deciding fourth set, finishing with 17 kills and two errors in the four-set win.

Junior Dakota Hershberger (Belleville, Pa., Mifflin County) recorded a season-high 16 kills on a .366 hitting percentage.

The Titans erased a 13-10 deficit in the opening set with six straight points, moving ahead 16-13 behind sophomore Kylie Anthony's (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) serving run that included two aces and kills from senior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) and Hershberger. Fredonia pulled within 24-23 late, but the Titans finished the set on a Fredonia service error for a 25-23 win.

The Titans got back even at 3-3 in the second set on a junior Morgan O'Brien's (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) kill, but Fredonia scored the next seven points to put the Titans in a 10-3 hole. The Titans added kills from senior Zoie Reid (Salem, Ohio, Salem), Trent, freshman Violet Seaman (Hartville, Ohio, Lake) and O'Brien later in the set, but Fredonia State kept separation and took the set 25-14.

The Titans recovered from a 12-9 deficit in the third set, tying it at 13-13 and moving in front 14-13 on consecutive Fredonia State attack errors. After Fredonia State later closed the gap to 21-20, the Titans scored four of the final five points, getting two kills from Reid and one from Hershberger to finish a 25-21 set win.

The Titans broke open the fourth set with a 6-0 run that moved the score from 14-10 to 20-10, with junior Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) serving for five straight points and Hershberger recording three kills in the stretch. Olivia Trent later added a service ace as the Titans scored the final four points to finish the set at 25-12.

Gecina finished 34 digs and added a service ace. O'Brien matched her career high with 30 assists to go along with 15 digs, six kills and one block assist. Reid added 11 kills while hitting .310.

Muskingum 3, Westminster 0
The Titans overcame an early deficit to snag a 10-8 on consecutive O'Brien kills, with both assisted by senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro). Muskingum responded with five straight points to move ahead 13-10, and the Titans later got back within 20-17 on a service ace from sophomore Halle Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry). Muskingum finished the set at 25-18.

In the second set, the Titans made their main push after falling behind 17-11, using a Trent kill, a Muskingum attack error and an O'Brien kill to get within three, 17-14. Muskingum answered with the next three points and kept the Titans from closing the gap the rest of the way. Trent and O'Brien continued to add kills, and Hershberger had a late kill, but the Titans dropped the set 25-18.

Facing a 24-13 deficit, the Titans extended the third set with Reid's kill and three straight Muskingum attack errors. Earlier, O'Brien, Trent, Hershberger and Reid each recorded kills as the Titans tried to keep pace after the set was tied at 3-3. Muskingum ended the set on a Titans service error to take it 25-17.

Gecina collected 22 digs for the Titans. Trent finished with 11 kills and added 10 digs and one block assist. O'Brien had 13 assists, eight kills, five digs and one block assist, while Davis recorded 13 assists and added seven digs.
