Westminster splits on opening day of THE Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla.--The Westminster softball team posted a split Sunday at THE Spring Games, falling to Alfred, 5-2, before registering an 8-0, six-inning win over Nichols. 

Game 1: Alfred 5, Westminster 2
Trailing 2-1 after five-and-a-half innings, Alfred used a four-run sixth to claim the win in the opener. 

Junior Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) and sophomore Sam Levac (Oakville, Ontario, Canada, Garth Webb) had three hits apiece. It was Karpa's second three-hit game of her career; it was the first for Levac. Senior Kelly Troup (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) went 2-for-3 with run-scoring base hits in the second and fourth, respectively. 

Sophomore righty Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) suffered the complete-game loss, giving up five runs (5 earned) on eight hits with a pair of walks and eight strikeouts. She has struck out eight or more batters 10 times in her 21 collegiate starts. 

Game 2: Westminster 8, Nichols 0 (6 inn.)
Junior right-hander Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) fired a three-hit shutout to key the run-rule victory over Nichols. She walked two and fanned four.

Westminster piled up a dozen hits in the win. Sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Coraopolis, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. 

Up next:
Monday, Westminster will take on Otterbein at 9 a.m. and Calvin at 11:30 a.m. Both games are scheduled to take place at Hancock Park.
