Westminster takes a pair against Chatham

NEW WILMGINGTON, Pa.--Behind terrific starts by sophomore Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) and junior Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman), the Westminster softball team opened its home schedule Wednesday with a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep of Chatham, winning both games by a 3-0 score.

Westminster improved to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the league with the two shutout victories.

Game 1: Westminster 3, Chatham 0
Piper upped her season record to 5-2 with the game one win. She allowed two hits, walked one and struck out 11. Piper retired 16-straight batters before Kyla Milne's double in the sixth. She has struck out 10 or more batters three times this year.

Scoreless through four, sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Coraopolis, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) doubled in the fifth to score junior Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington), who led off the inning with a double. O'Brien and sophomore Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) engineered a double steal later in the inning, with Jordan taking second and O'Brien swiping home. Junior Ava Karpa's (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) single to right plated Jordan to close out the scoring.

O'Brien went 2-for-3 with a double, a single, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Joens went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
