Westminster tops Bridgewater State

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.--The Westminster baseball team posted a 5-3 victory over Bridgewater State Thursday afternoon at the Polo Grounds inside The Ripken Experience complex.

Leading 1-0 after sophomore Ian Temple's (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) sacrifice fly in the first, Westminster stretched its lead to 4-0 with a three-run third. Following back-to-back RBI base hits from junior Braden Zeigler (New Castle, Pa., Shenango) and sophomore Jack Strausser (Greenville, Pa., Greenville), freshman Breckin Minich (New Bethlehem, Pa., Redbank Valley) added a sacrifice fly later in the frame.

After Bridgewater State scratched out a pair of runs in the sixth, sophomore Aaron Jones (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius) plated the Titans' fifth run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Freshman righty Jacob Harrelson (Canal Fulton, Ohio, Green) fired 5.0 scoreless innings to earn his second win of the season. He allowed six hits, walked four and struck out three. Harrelson escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth when junior Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) turned a terrific inning-ending double play. Junior right-hander Jon Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) worked the final 1.2 innings to secure his second career save, allowing one run (earned) on four hits with three strikeouts.

Zeigler went 3-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. It was his fifth multi-hit game this season and second three-hit game of his career. Sophomore Tom Rook (Clarence Center, N.Y., Clarence) finished 3-for-4 with a double out of the leadoff spot. He has eight hits in his last nine at-bats. Temple's leadoff single in the seventh extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Up next:
Westminster (7-3) will wrap up its six-game spring break schedule Friday against Dean. First pitch from Crosley Field is scheduled for 9 a.m.
